It is the postcard most people have in mind when they picture Palawan — and it is a genuinely long way from where most flights land, which is where planning pays off.
What you should know before you book
- El Nido sits at the northern tip of mainland Palawan and faces Bacuit Bay, whose islands are limestone karst — the same rock that forms the lagoons and cliffs the bay is known for.
- Island-hopping is organised by the local boat operators as a set of lettered day tours (A, B, C and D), each covering a different group of islands, lagoons and beaches in the bay.
- The town is reachable overland from Puerto Princesa along the national highway, or by air into Lio Airport (ENI), a short way north of the town proper.
- Nacpan Beach lies north of the town centre and is reached by road rather than by boat, so it fits a land day rather than an island-hopping day.
- The municipality collects an eco-tourism development fee from visitors, arranged locally on arrival.
