El Nido to Sabang (Underground River)

El Nido Sabang / Underground River

Both ends of this trip already have a page here, and neither of them tells you how to join them up. El Nido sits at the northern tip of mainland Palawan; the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is reached through the seaside village of Sabang, a long way back down the mainland towards Puerto Princesa. It is a full southbound run on the same national highway corridor that links El Nido and the city, and it has to land at Sabang in time for a park slot you cannot rebook on the day — which is why the vehicle is worth having fixed, priced and in writing before you leave El Nido.

Quote this transfer

The cave entrance of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, framed by jungle-covered limestone.

Plan the route correctly

  • This is a southbound mainland run rather than a local hop: El Nido is at the northern tip of Palawan, and Sabang is a long way south of it on the west coast.
  • The park is capped. Entry to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park runs on a daily visitor limit, so the permit date is fixed first and the vehicle is timed around it — never the other way round.
  • The vehicle stops at Sabang. From Sabang wharf the last leg to the beach at the cave entrance is by boat, which is a separate arrangement from the road transfer.
  • One-way usually beats a return. Rather than driving back north the same day, the run can carry on to a Puerto Princesa hotel or to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), with your luggage in the vehicle while you are in the park.
  • The park lies in the Saint Paul Mountain Range on Palawan’s west coast and has been managed by the Puerto Princesa city government since 1992. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999, named one of the New7Wonders of Nature in 2012 and designated a Ramsar Wetland Site the same year — which is a large part of why the daily cap exists at all.
  • Tell us your permit time and whether the day ends back in El Nido or south in Puerto Princesa, and the pickup is worked back from it instead of guessed.

What your quote can cover

  • Private hotel pickup in El Nido at the time confirmed in writing, including early starts
  • The southbound private transfer to Sabang, timed to the park permit you already hold
  • Luggage carried in the vehicle if you are continuing south rather than returning
  • Onward routing to a Puerto Princesa hotel or Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) instead of doubling back
  • The return leg north to El Nido if you would rather keep your base in the north

El Nido to Sabang / Underground River: common questions

Can you visit the Underground River as a day trip from El Nido?

Yes, and we quote it — but go in knowing it is a full southbound run down the mainland and back, not a short hop. Most travellers get more out of the day by taking it one way: south to Sabang for the park, then on to Puerto Princesa, instead of driving the same road twice.

Do I need the park permit before booking the transfer?

Yes. Entry to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park runs on a daily visitor cap, so the permit is the least flexible part of the day. Confirm it first and the vehicle is timed around what you already hold.

Does the vehicle take me to the cave itself?

No. The road transfer ends at Sabang. From Sabang wharf the last leg to the beach at the cave entrance is by boat, which is arranged separately and then aligned with your vehicle — the same split as on the Puerto Princesa to Sabang transfer.

Can we carry on to Puerto Princesa or the airport after the park?

Yes, and it is usually the better routing. The run can end at a Puerto Princesa hotel or at Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), quoted as one itinerary rather than two transfers. If you are flying out the same day, tell us the flight and we will say plainly whether the timing works.

Anything specific to your dates, group or pickup point is answered on the quote — that is where the actual vehicle, timing and fixed all-in price come from.
